What are Electrical & Engineering?
Electrical and engineering tools on SabTools.in cover the AC/DC circuit sizing, voltage-drop, power-consumption, and renewable-energy math that electricians, MEP consultants, home DIY-ers, and solar-system designers use across residential, commercial, and industrial installations — what wire gauge to choose for a given load and distance, how much voltage drop to expect across a cable run, what the monthly electricity bill will be given appliance mix and DISCOM tariff, how Ohm's Law applies to a mixed-component circuit, what transformer kVA to specify for a given secondary load, and what solar-panel kW capacity the rooftop can support given geographic latitude. These are tasks that sit in the grey zone between 'an electrician can do it in their head' and 'requires a qualified electrical engineer' — having explicit calculators gives the homeowner a sanity-check against the electrician's quote and the contractor a precise number to cite in their design documents.
Key Features & Capabilities
Wire sizing per IS 732 and load-current calculation
Wire Size Calculator takes current (A), voltage (V), cable length, ambient temperature, and installation method (open air, conduit, buried); returns minimum conductor cross-section (mm²) per IS 732. Supports copper and aluminium conductor types with correct current-carrying capacity derating for installation environment.
Voltage-drop and cable-size verification
Voltage Drop Calculator takes cable length + conductor area + load current; returns voltage drop in V and %. Indian Electricity Rules mandate <3% drop in wiring and <6% from service-entrance to farthest point. Use to verify that chosen wire size meets the code, particularly for long runs (>30 m) in large houses or commercial buildings.
Appliance-level monthly-bill projection
Power Consumption Calculator takes appliance list (AC, refrigerator, geyser, lights, fans, TV, washing machine) with wattages and daily hours; computes monthly kWh, then applies your state DISCOM's slab tariff (with fixed charge, meter rent, duty) for the monthly bill in rupees. Shows slab-crossing effects so you see the penalty for moving from slab 2 to slab 3.
Ohm's Law and AC-circuit essentials
Ohm's Law Calculator computes V = IR and cyclic variants with inputs in any of the three, plus P = VI for power. Transformer Calculator sizes kVA for given load (kW + power factor + safety margin) and voltage conversion ratio. Solar Panel Calculator computes required kW capacity for a given monthly consumption, given rooftop area and latitude-based insolation.
Common Use Cases
Residential wiring design verification
Building a new house or renovating the wiring: Wire Size Calculator for each major circuit (AC circuit needs 4 sq mm copper for 16A load; lighting circuit works with 1.5 sq mm for 6A). Voltage Drop Calculator verifies that the kitchen's 25-m-long circuit at 16A stays under 3% drop. Use the output to cross-check the electrician's material list.
Electricity-bill reduction and appliance planning
Bill Rs 8,000/month and wondering which appliance is the biggest culprit: Power Consumption Calculator with all appliances entered shows the AC is ₹4,500, geyser is ₹1,200, and the rest is lighting + small appliances. Targeting the AC (setting to 26°C instead of 22°C, using a fan supplement) saves ₹1,500/month — quantified, not guessed.
Rooftop solar system sizing
Homeowner considering rooftop solar: Solar Panel Calculator takes monthly consumption (say 600 kWh) + rooftop area + latitude; returns required kW capacity (4.5-5 kWp for most metros), expected generation, payback period at current state net-metering tariff, and subsidy eligibility under PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Pair with Power Consumption Calculator to confirm consumption baseline.
Industrial and commercial transformer sizing
Small-manufacturer planning a 50-kW-load installation: Transformer Calculator sizes the required kVA (65-70 kVA with power-factor and safety margin), and suggests 11-kV-to-433-V step-down configuration per standard Indian industrial connection. Use the output for the DISCOM's load-sanction application.
How to Choose the Right Tool
For electrical design — Wire Size Calculator first (pick the cable); Voltage Drop Calculator second (verify the cable meets code); Ohm's Law Calculator for quick sanity checks. For consumption and billing — Power Consumption Calculator for the monthly-bill projection at your DISCOM's tariff. For transformers — Transformer Calculator for kVA sizing given secondary load and voltage. For solar planning — Solar Panel Calculator for rooftop sizing and ROI. For load calculation and service-connection sizing, the Electrical Load Calculator in the Construction category is appropriate (it focuses on diversified residential/commercial load for service-entrance sizing, whereas Wire Size Calculator here sizes individual circuits). Workflow for a new residential installation: Load calculation (Construction category) → individual circuit Wire Size Calculator → Voltage Drop Calculator verification → (install). Workflow for solar: Power Consumption Calculator (baseline) → Solar Panel Calculator (system sizing) → (install). None of these tools replace a licensed electrical contractor or MEP consultant for the actual design sign-off required by the DISCOM — they provide the numbers that the consultant verifies and applies their licence-seal to.
Electrical & Engineering Built for India
Indian electrical installations follow IS 732 (code of practice for electrical wiring), IS 1255 (code for installation of power cables), and the Central Electricity Authority's Regulations for Electricity Supply and Utility. Wire sizes are specified in sq mm (1.0, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16, 25 sq mm common residential sizes), not AWG as in US practice. Domestic voltage is 230 V single-phase, 415 V three-phase — different from the US 120/240 V, so current ratings for the same appliance are about half of the US figure. Safety factors (ambient temperature 45°C derating, installation-method derating) are more aggressive than IEC because Indian ambient conditions run hotter. DISCOM tariffs are slab-structured — the first 100 units/month are at a low slab (₹3-4/unit), 100-300 at a medium slab (₹5-7), 300-500 at a high slab (₹7-9), 500+ at the highest slab (₹8-11). The slab crossing matters — a household at 299 units pays significantly less per unit than at 301 units. Our Power Consumption Calculator shows the slab crossing explicitly. For rooftop solar, India's PM Surya Ghar Yojana (launched 2024) offers subsidy up to ₹78,000 for 3 kW and up to ₹18,000/kW thereafter, plus net-metering at most state DISCOMs; our Solar Panel Calculator incorporates both when you select your state and residential category.
