Open ToolWalk into any SBI branch in Bangalore to open a savings account, and the relationship manager will ask for two documents: PAN and a second ID. Nine out of ten times, the customer pulls out their Voter ID card. That laminated card — or the e-EPIC PDF saved on someone's phone — is still the most widely accepted address proof in India after Aadhaar. But here's the catch: a surprising number of EPIC numbers people quote during KYC, rental agreements, or while filing Form 6B to link Aadhaar with their voter ID, are typed wrong. A missing letter, a transposed digit, or a card belonging to an old constituency in a different state — and suddenly the application bounces.
The Voter ID Info tool on SabTools.in exists to catch those errors before they cost you a trip to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). Paste in your EPIC number, and the validator checks the 10-character format the Election Commission of India uses, parses out the alphabetic prefix that hints at the state and assembly constituency, and tells you whether the structure is valid before you submit it anywhere official.
What the 10-character EPIC number actually encodes
Every Electors Photo Identity Card issued by ECI carries a unique 10-character alphanumeric string. The format is fixed:
- First 3 characters: alphabetic prefix — called the Functional Unique Series (FUS) code. This identifies the Assembly Constituency / state branch that issued the card. For instance, cards issued in parts of Karnataka often start with KAB, KAC, or WKK; cards from Maharashtra carry codes like MT‑prefixed series; Delhi voters typically see DL/ family codes; Uttar Pradesh has its own large set beginning with UP blocks like UPF, UPG, UPH.
- Last 7 characters: numeric serial — the unique running number within that constituency series.
So a valid EPIC looks like KAB1234567 or UPG7654321. Anything with 9 characters, 11 characters, lowercase letters in the prefix, digits in the first three positions, or special characters is structurally invalid — and ECI's portal will reject it the moment you hit submit.
An important nuance: the alphabetic prefix is not a clean state code. Tamil Nadu doesn't simply use "TN"; West Bengal doesn't simply use "WB". Each Assembly Constituency was historically allocated its own three-letter block, and there are over 4,000 such codes in active circulation. The tool maps the prefix to the issuing state and gives you a reasonable inference, which is enough for most use cases — verifying KYC documents, double-checking a tenant's voter ID before drafting a rental affidavit, or confirming you typed your own EPIC correctly on the e-filing portal.
Who actually needs to validate an EPIC number?
This isn't a vanity check. There are concrete situations every month where Indians need an EPIC that is structurally correct and matches the central electoral roll:
- Aadhaar-Voter ID linking via Form 6B. Since the 2021 amendment to the Representation of the People Act, voters can voluntarily link Aadhaar with their EPIC. The voters.eci.gov.in portal validates the EPIC format the instant you type it; an invalid format throws an error and resets the form.
- Address proof for home loan applications. When a couple in Pune applies for a ₹65L home loan from HDFC at 8.60%, the underwriting team verifies the EPIC against ECI's database. A mistyped digit means the file goes back to the branch and the disbursal slips by 3–5 working days — painful when the builder's payment milestone is due.
- New SIM card KYC, demat account opening, or NPS Tier-1 enrolment. All three accept voter ID as POI/POA, and all three run a format check before pushing the document to backend OCR.
- Filing applications for legal proceedings. Many advocates require voter ID as identity proof while drafting petitions, particularly for civil suits in district courts. If you're paying stamp duty on a plaint, you can estimate the bill upfront using the court fee calculator before the affidavit is even drafted.
- RTI applications related to electoral matters. If you're asking the State Election Commission why a name was deleted from the rolls, you'll need to cite your own EPIC accurately in the application. The RTI application generator can produce a Section 6 application that's correctly formatted for the appropriate Public Information Officer.
How the validator catches errors people miss
A 19-year-old engineering student in Coimbatore named Lavanya tried to register on the Voter Helpline app last month to download her e-EPIC. She typed the number from her physical card as TN0 1234567 with a space and a zero where the letter O looked similar. The portal rejected it three times. She assumed her card was cancelled and panicked.
The actual problem: characters 1 through 3 must be alphabetic, never numeric, and never contain whitespace. Once she stripped the space and replaced the zero with a capital O (her real prefix was TNO), validation passed.
The most frequent errors the SabTools.in voter card validator flags:
- Confusing O and 0 — happens in nearly 1 in 8 cases, because handwritten cards and old laminated EPICs from the early 2000s used a font that made them visually identical.
- Confusing I and 1, or B and 8 — same root cause; the prefix should always be letters, the suffix always digits.
- Including a forward slash — older paper EPICs printed the number as KAB/1234567. The slash isn't part of the official number.
- Pasting from WhatsApp with trailing spaces or invisible Unicode characters — surprisingly common; the tool trims and normalises before checking.
- Using 11 characters because someone added a tehsil prefix on their own.
Run the EPIC through the validator first, and you'll know whether the format is structurally sound. From there, the next step is to verify the electoral roll entry itself — which is done on the ECI's official portal at voters.eci.gov.in using the "Search in Electoral Roll" feature.
What the tool does not do — and where to go next
Honesty matters here. The Voter ID Info tool is a format validator and prefix decoder. It does not — and cannot — call ECI's live database to confirm your name is on the electoral roll, fetch your booth number, or download your e-EPIC. Only ECI's portal can do that, and it requires you to log in with your registered mobile number or Aadhaar.
What the tool gives you:
- Format validation (pass/fail with a clear reason for failure)
- State/region inference from the alphabetic prefix
- A clean, copy-ready version of the number with case normalised
- Quick guidance on which ECI form you need next (Form 6 / 7 / 8 / 6B)
For the actual status check — whether your card is active, which polling booth you'll vote at, and your Part Number/Serial Number — head to voters.eci.gov.in directly. The tool is designed to be the 30-second pre-flight check before you spend 10 minutes on the official portal.
The form jungle: Form 6, 7, 8, 6B explained simply
Most confusion around voter cards isn't about the EPIC number itself; it's about which form to file when something needs changing. Here's the no-nonsense version:
- Form 6 — New voter registration. File this if you've just turned 18, or if you're a first-time registrant. Students in Kota who've shifted from their home state file this once they want to vote from their PG address.
- Form 6A — For overseas Indian electors (NRIs).
- Form 6B — Voluntary linking of Aadhaar with EPIC. Takes 5 minutes online if your mobile is linked to both.
- Form 7 — Objection or request to delete a name (used after a death, or to remove duplicate enrolments).
- Form 8 — The workhorse. Use it for correction of personal details (name spelling, date of birth, photograph), shifting of residence within the same constituency, transposition to a different constituency, replacement of a damaged/lost EPIC, and marking yourself as a Person with Disability.
So if a finance professional in Mumbai's BKC has shifted from Mulund to Andheri — both within Maharashtra but in different assembly constituencies — they file Form 8 for transposition. The EPIC number stays the same; only the constituency mapping changes. The new voter slip with the updated booth details usually reaches via post within 30 days, though digital download is available immediately after approval.
Downloading your e-EPIC — the proper sequence
Since 2021, ECI has issued the e-EPIC: a digitally signed PDF version of your voter card that's legally valid as ID and address proof, accepted by every PSU bank, every airline, and every government department. The download flow:
- Run your printed EPIC through the validator on SabTools.in to confirm the format. If it fails, your physical card may have a typo — file Form 8 for correction first.
- Go to voters.eci.gov.in and log in (or sign up using your mobile number).
- Click "Download e-EPIC", enter your EPIC number, choose the state, and request OTP.
- The PDF downloads as a 200–400 KB file, secure-PDF format, with a digitally signed certificate from ECI.
A point worth noting: the e-EPIC is download-once-free per person (with caveats — newly registered voters can download for free within a window; otherwise a nominal fee may apply for re-download via the Voter Helpline). Save it to cloud storage immediately. Print it on A4, laminate if you want — it's just as valid as the physical card.
Voter ID and other legal documents you'll inevitably need
Most life-admin tasks that need a voter ID also need other documents in the same package. A few common pairings:
- Renting a flat in Whitefield or Hinjewadi — Voter ID for address proof + rental agreement + a self-declaration affidavit. You can draft the latter using the affidavit generator for address proof and self-declaration formats that landlords actually accept.
- Cheque bounce or recovery matters — Identity proof of the complainant (often voter ID) is filed along with the notice. The legal notice generator produces a Section 138 NI Act notice that you attach to the dispatch.
- RTI to your local Electoral Registration Officer — Querying why a name was struck off, or why a new application is pending beyond 30 days, is a textbook Section 6 RTI application.
- Court filings — Identity of the petitioner is filed alongside the plaint; advocate fees and stamp duty vary across states and can be estimated separately.
Frequently asked questions about EPIC numbers
My old voter card has 8 characters (like ABC/12345). Is it still valid?
Cards issued before the standardisation drive in the mid-2000s may carry shorter alphanumeric formats. They remain valid as identity documents, but ECI strongly encourages holders to apply for a fresh EPIC through Form 8 (replacement of EPIC). The new card will follow the 10-character format and will sync correctly with the e-EPIC system. If a digital download fails for the older format, that's the giveaway.
Does the state code in the EPIC change if I move from Karnataka to Telangana?
Yes. The EPIC is tied to the assembly constituency where you're enrolled. If you genuinely shift your ordinary residence — say from Bangalore Central to Hyderabad's Khairatabad — you must file Form 6 in Telangana, which will issue a fresh EPIC with a Telangana-series prefix. You also need to file Form 7 in Karnataka to remove yourself from the old roll, otherwise you risk a duplicate enrolment, which is an offence under Section 17 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
Can I have two voter IDs — one for my hometown and one for my work city?
No. Indian electoral law allows enrolment in exactly one constituency. Holding two active EPICs is illegal and the ERO can prosecute. The honest path is to update the address each time you shift via Form 8.
If the validator says my EPIC format is invalid, what should I do?
First, retype it carefully — check for O vs 0 and I vs 1 confusions, and remove any slashes or spaces. If it still fails, your physical card likely has a printing error or is from a pre-standardisation batch. Visit voters.eci.gov.in, search for your name using your district and assembly constituency, retrieve the corrected EPIC from the electoral roll, and apply for a replacement card via Form 8.
A quick tangent on the other tools you'll touch the same week
The Indians who validate voter IDs also tend to be doing other quick number-crunching the same week — checking the EMI on a top-up loan, computing GST on a freelance invoice, or working out a percentage discount on a property deal. The EMI calculator handles the first; the GST calculator covers the second; and the percentage calculator closes out the third. Treat the voter ID validator as the legal-document checkpoint in that same workflow — a 30-second sanity check that saves you an hour at the bank.
